It was an exciting night watching the UFC 153!

UFC 153 took place on Saturday Night October 13,2012 in Rio de Janeiro. The main event featured UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva and Light Heavyweight Stephan Bonnar. It is this fight that is the focus of this article.

For starters,  I really like both fighters. The first time I saw Stephen Bonnar was in Season 1 of “The Ultimate Fighter”. Forest Griffin won a unanimous decision in a bloody battle some people say was one of the best fights in UFC history. It was so exciting that Dana White gave Stephen Bonnar a UFC with a contract as well.

Dana White likes real fighters and he rewards them when they bring it!

Now let’s talk about Anderson Silva. He is hands down the best fighter to hit the UFC, period! At times Silva has made some of the best UFC fighters look like total amatures. He is truly magical to watch.

Let’s fast forward to Saturday night in Rio de Janeiro Anderson Silva VS Stephen Bonnar. As stated earlier, I really like both these guys. When I first heard about the fight I didn’t know what to make of it. Did Bonnar stand a chance? If he WON, great for Bonnar. If he lost, nothing lost…

I’ll be honest, as much as I like Anderson Silva my heart was rooting for Stephen Bonnar. Not that I wanted Silva to lose, but I wanted Bonnar to WIN! He needed a WIN! If Bonnar had any hopes of moving on, and moving forward with his fight career he needed a win.

The week prior to the fight I heard chatter online of people talking about the “Rocky Factor”. Bonnar was the underdog agasint the Champ Anderson Silva.

– What if Bonnar makes it thru round 1,2 and 3?
– What if Bonnar gets lucky and catches Silva and knocks him out?
– What if he submitts Silva???

All the possibilties were going thru my mind. What if? What if? What if?

Ok, it’s fight night in Rio. The prelim fights were exciting. The main card was awesome.

Now for the MAIN event, Anderson Silva VS Stephen Bonnar…
As they walked into the ring, in my head I could hear the theme song to “Rocky”.No joke. Besides TUF Season 1 Final, this is the BIGGEST fight of Stephen Bonnars career. He didn’t care about getting a belt. If he wins, he could say for the rest of his life, on this night he BEAT Anderson Silva, the BEST in the world!  What could be better than that???

CUT TO THE CHASE:
Anderson Silva was masterful in his fight with Bonnar. Silva let Bonnar play with him on the cage then Silva went back to the exact spot on the cage and Bonnar couldn’t get anything to work. Then a heel trip and a MASSIVE knee to the chest and BOOM the fight was DONE!

Round 1 at 4:40 the fight was called and Anderson Silva WON.

I am happy for Anderson Silva, he’s the greatest. However, I am sad for Stephen Bonnar. At the end of the fight Silva mad it clear he was staying in his weight class and only moved up to fight Bonnar to save the fight card, and save the card he did.

Every once in while there comes an underdog that people want to get behind and support. I think Stephen Bonnar had some of that support, however it wasn’t his night. No one is more dissappointed than Bonnar. On this night Bonnar fought the BEST in the world.

If Stephen Bonnar was here right now I’d say, “Sorry it didn’t turn out like you planned. I was rooting for you and so were a bunch of other people from around the world!”

Bottom line…UFC 153 in Rio proved to be another great night at the fights! Until Next time…

See Ya Ringside,
Robby LeBlanc
